The American Jewish Paradox; Embracing Choice in a Changing World - February 17th from 2:00-4:00

Conversations:  The American Jewish Paradox; Embracing Choice in a Changing World

February 17th, 2-4:00 pm

Main Synagogue-Conference Room

Facilitator:  Sherry Shapiro, Inclusion/Interfaith Task Force Chair

Based on a book and podcast, by and with Robert H. Mnookin, this gathering will be an opportunity to discuss some of the ideas expressed by Mnookin and share perspectives.  The podcast, Judaism Unbound - Episode 146, and/or the book (title of session) should be heard and/or read prior to the session.

The situation of American Jews today is deeply paradoxical.  Jews have achieved unprecedented integration, influence, and esteem in virtually every facet of American life. But this extraordinarily diverse community faces challenges in America today.   Can the American Jewish community collectively sustain and pass on to the next generation a sufficient sense of Jewish identity?  Who counts as being Jewish in America?  The author, Robert Mnookin, promotes a radically inclusive American-Jewish community-one where being Jewish can depend on personal choice and public self-identification, not simply birth or formal religious conversion.  He envisions a community that embraces diversity and debate, and in so doing, preserves and strengthens the Jewish identity into the next generation and beyond.”  (Book cover excerpt)
